About Tulsa Founders Chorus

Tulsa, Oklahoma, April 11, 1938.....

O.C. Cash and Rupert Hall bluffed their way thru an interview with a reporter for a local newspaper and began an odyssey of harmony that still rings today! The organization they started on the roof garden of the Tulsa Club that evening became the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America. Now named the Barbershop Harmony Society, it is the largest all-male a cappella singing society in the world.

The Founders Chorus stands alone as the Founding Chapter of the BHS and is as active as ever. We invite you to come and share the fun and fellowship with gentlemen who love to sing. Even though we love singing “The Old Songs,” The Founders Chorus “keeps it fresh” by branching out to more modern music while still keeping the tradition of the barbershop style.

Our mission is to Seek, Develop, Use and Enhance the skills and talents of each member to such an extent that progress seems limitless while providing the best possible environment and fun atmosphere for the continuous personal musical growth of our members so they can experience the joy of performing primarily four-part harmony in the barbershop style.

Tulsa Founders Chorus is a membership organization of men, who meet regularly to practice, perform, socialize, and have fun in the All-American Barbershop Harmony style. We currently have  singers from all walks of life, and all parts of the Tulsa area.

The Tulsa Founders Chorus loves to get out and sing for our community. We sing at annual shows, a number of community events, and at annual competitions. We also perform Singing Valentines around Valentines Day. We are available to sing at your next function or event. If you're looking for a unique musical experience to liven up your event, please check out our Hire Us section.

In addition to sharing our music with others, another great passion of ours is learning more about the art of acapella singing. Vocal instruction is a regular part of chorus rehearsals, and a very important component of the chorus experience. A couple of times a year, we will get coaching from a visiting master in the art of barbershop, where we learn many fabulous tricks of the trade.

CompetitionIn the fall of every year, Tulsa Founders Chorus participates in the SouthWestern District chorus competition. Competitions are a special time for quartets and choruses from our division and district to come together to sing for each other, and get some constructive feedback from a panel of judges. The winners of the District competition in both quartet and chorus categories get to travel to International Competition, which is held in the summer in a city selected each year. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Barbershop Harmony Society and the International Competition will be held in Orlando, Florida.

Most choruses have a number of members who form their own vocal quartets in addition to singing with the chorus. Tulsa Founders Chorus currently is home to a number of wonderful quartets, and we are very proud of them! Click here to see our quartet section to learn more about them.

Tulsa Founders Chorus is a chapter of Barbershop Harmony Society, a non-profit organization of approximately 25,000 members in choruses and quartets, worldwide. The Headquarters is in Nashville, TN.
